Taking over the firm in 2021, Michael had the vision of modernising the business utilising technology to create more efficiencies throughout the firm.
From his first role working in commercial and property teams in Nelson to a successful career working for a large international firm in London and then returning to his home town of Palmerston North, Michael has established himself as a trusted advisor for clients with property, company and commercial law issues as well as wills and trusts. He is a strategist and relentlessly positive cheerleader for the Cochrane Law team and is appreciated by clients for his professional, friendly and practical approach.
Michael’s interests outside of work are spending time with his lovely wife Anna and their three boys, catching up with friends, playing and watching sport, reading and travel.

Tracy is our family law specialist, practising in most areas of family law including care of children, family violence and all aspects of relationship property. The Family Court work she undertakes includes
applications for appointment of a welfare guardian and/or property manager for people who no longer have capacity to make decisions.
Obtaining a double degree in Law and Arts (history) from the University of Canterbury in 2001, she was admitted to the bar in 2002 and has been working as a barrister and solicitor practicing family law in Palmerston North ever since.
Tracy is currently the Chairperson of the Manawatu Family Courts Association. Outside of work her interests include playing hockey, reading and spending time with family and friends. Originally from a farming background, Tracy enjoys spending time on her rural property, gardening and caring for her animals.

Nicole is a Solicitor, and advises on residential and commercial conveyancing, estates and asset planning.
Starting as junior receptionist in 2008, in just three years she worked her way towards becoming a legal executive. Nicole is hugely proud of joining the Wellington Central District Branch of Legal Executives, New Zealand in 2019 of which she was the President from October 2020 to October 2022. Nicole began her law degree shortly after the COVID lockdown and was admitted to the bar in 2025.
Nicole’s interests outside of work include running, cycling, reading and spending time with friends and family.
Registered Legal Executive – Affiliate
Amy is a Registered Legal Executive who specialises in residential conveyancing, primarily with first home buyers. She also provides advice on Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney.
Amy joined the firm in 2019 as our receptionist, and after progressing through the different roles within the firm, she received her Legal Executive Diploma in 2022. Her passion for the legal profession, combined with her commitment to helping people navigate important life decisions, continues to drive her professional development and career progression.
Outside of work, Amy enjoys dancing and performing, spending time outdoors, reading, and taking trips around in her van.
Registered Legal Executive – Affiliate
Paige joined the firm in early 2021, initially as our receptionist. Since then, she has worked in a typist role and has acted as legal secretary to Nicole Mangin.
Having completed her Legal Executive Diploma in early 2025, Paige is now a Registered Legal Executive. She has a strong passion for residential property law and takes pride in guiding her clients through the legal aspects of purchasing, selling and refinancing their homes. Her role includes liaising with banks, Solicitors, mortgage brokers and Real Estate Agents, preparing legal documents, providing advice and managing settlements through to completion.
Outside of work, Paige is an avid and competitive netball player. She enjoys keeping active and loves actively spending her weekends with friends and family.
Legal Secretary to Michael Cochrane
Sophie joined the firm at the start of 2024 where she began her role as Receptionist. She has since worked as a Typist and now works as Legal Secretary to Michael Cochrane. This role includes completing settlements, preparing legal documents, and maintaining regular communication with clients. Sophie is motivated by responsibility and challenge, and she thrives in a team environment where she can support others and continue learning every day.
She is currently completing her Legal Executive qualification and looks forward to one day managing her own clients.
Outside of work, Sophie enjoys spending time with friends and family, being active, shopping, and spending time at the beach (particularly the Mount).
